Women in the Armed Forces and Diversity

Vision of Diversity and Inclusion

(from the Diversity strategy «inclusive overall system Swiss Armed Forces / Defence Group»)

«The Swiss Armed Forces and the Defence Group offer space for the diversity of all their members, who treat each other with respect and mutual appreciation. This strengthens the overall system in fulfilling its basic mandates – national defence, support for civilian authorities and military peacekeeping.»

The Specialised Office for Women in the Armed Forces and Diversity (WiAD) is committed to diversity and inclusion in the Swiss Armed Forces and the Defence group. Promoting diversity in the overall system of the Swiss Armed Forces and the Defence group is based on the fundamental mandates of the Swiss Armed Forces: national defence, support for civilian authorities and military peacekeeping. This mandate-oriented approach to promoting diversity lays the groundwork for targeted support of diversity and ensures that it is applied where it can have the greatest impact. The Specialist Office supports the efforts to increase the proportion of women in the Swiss Armed Forces (conscript members) and in the Defence sector (uniformed and non-uniformed employees), and to promote diversity in the organisation as a whole. The Armed Forces command will not tolerate any cases of discrimination, sexism, harassment or other forms of violation of human dignity and requires that these issues be rigorously addressed rather than ignored. It is committed to a culture of openness and inclusion within the Armed Forces. WiAD offers information, advice, support and mediation – for general as well as individual, sensitive concerns. All conscripts and the staff of the Defence sector (professional military, members of the military peace support service, civilian staff) – of any gender, age, language, origin and ethnicity, religion and belief, physical and mental condition, gender identity and sexual orientation – can benefit from these services.
