Diversity in the Armed Forces

Diversity in the military concerns everyone. Men and women.

The Swiss Armed Forces is becoming more diverse: members of the Armed Forces have different life stories. They are recognised with their multifaceted characteristics, interests and talents. In the future, more strongly so. The diversity of the Swiss population should be better incorporated in the Swiss Armed Forces.

What exactly does this mean?

There is room for diversity in the Swiss Armed Forces. Members of the Armed Forces are fully accepted just the way they are. Everyone contributes to respectful interaction and successful cooperation. Everyone has the right to protection against discrimination and to be treated equally. This applies to both men and women.

To ensure that this right is consistently applied, the Swiss Armed Forces rely on training, awareness-raising and counselling (by WiAD and others ), among other things. Furthermore, there are measures in the area of research and process improvement. The aim is to anchor and guarantee protection against discrimination in the system – from the moment of entry to the moment of leaving the Armed Forces. No ifs, ands, or buts.

The Armed Forces command will not tolerate any cases of discrimination, sexism, harassment or other forms of violations of human dignity. It requires consistent action against such behaviour and refuses to look the other way. It is committed to a culture of openness and inclusion within the Armed Forces.

Diversity in the Swiss Armed Forces is promoted through concrete short-, medium- and long-term measures, also as part of the Equality Strategy 2030 of the Swiss government.
