International NCO Advanced Leadership Course in a multinational environment – Reflections on a Transformative Experience

Duration: 7-18 Jul 25
We recently had the privilege of attending the International NCO Advanced Leadership Course in a multinational environment at the International NCO Academy in Switzerland. Spanning two intensive and rewarding weeks, the course brought together 28 participants from 19 nations, fostering a uniquely diverse and dynamic learning environment. This experience extended far beyond theoretical leadership concepts, it was about learning to lead effectively in a multinational, NATO-style context and building a professional network that will serve us throughout our careers.

From the outset, it was evident that this was not a conventional classroom course. The program emphasized experiential learning, open dialogue, and collaborative engagement. The curriculum focused on cultivating leadership competencies within a multinational military framework, where communication, cultural awareness, and cooperation are as critical as tactical proficiency.

One of the most enriching aspects of the course was the opportunity to collaborate with peers from a wide range of backgrounds. Assigned to mixed syndicates, we were challenged to work as cohesive teams to solve complex problems, conduct scenario-based exercises, engage in sensitive discussions, and deliver briefings, often under tight time constraints. These experiences underscored the importance of adaptability, open-mindedness, and clear communication in international setting.

The leadership and team-building exercises were particular highlights. Through realistic scenarios and practical challenges, we honed our skills in communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and decision-making. These simulations provided valuable insights into both leading and contributing to multinational teams, while also deepening our understanding of our individual leadership styles.

Cultural awareness played a pivotal role throughout the course. With 19 nationalities represented, we encountered a wide array of perspectives, communication styles, and approaches to problem-solving. While this diversity occasionally added complexity, it ultimately proved to be a significant strength. We learned to listen actively, navigate cultural nuances, and appreciate differing viewpoints, an experience that, in itself, was one of the course’s greatest benefits.

The instructors were exceptional in maintaining an engaging and relevant learning environment. Drawing from their own extensive experience, they enriched theoretical content with practical insights and facilitated meaningful group discussions. We were encouraged to reflect on our personal leadership styles and consider how to apply our learning within our respective units.

In retrospect, this course has been instrumental in our development, not only as NCO but also as members of the international military community. We gained confidence in operating within a multinational environment, enhanced our individual leadership and communication skills, and formed lasting friendships with colleagues from around the world. This experience broadened our perspective on leadership, reinforcing the importance of empathy, cultural intelligence, and adaptability in today’s complex operational landscape.

Beyond the immediate skills and knowledge gained, the course instilled a renewed sense of commitment to continuous professional growth. It challenged us to think critically, lead with integrity, and embrace the diversity that strengthens multinational cooperation. The lessons learned will undoubtedly influence how we lead, mentor, and collaborate in future assignments, both at home and abroad.

In just two weeks, the course delivered what many programs strive to achieve: a fast-paced, challenging, and deeply rewarding experience. I would highly recommend it to any NCO seeking to expand their leadership capabilities, prepare for roles in multinational settings, or simply grow as a more effective and globally minded leader.
