Centre for Historic Equipment of the Armed Forces
The Centre for Historic Equipment of the Armed Forces (CHEAF) bears overall responsibility for the Swiss Armed Forces’ combined collections of historic equipment. It is charged with documenting the armed forces’ history and technological developments over the past 200 years.
Centres of Competence for the Preservation of Equipment for Posterity (CCPEPs) in Thun, Burgdorf, Dübendorf and Uster house various collections – for instance personal equipment, weapons, vehicles, aircraft or technical devices – that can be viewed on request.
These CCPEPs are operated by privately-run foundations.
The collections’ primary purpose is to document and illustrate, using appropriate objects, central aspects of the history of the armed forces, its operational doctrines, technology and industry, as well as of Switzerland’s cultural and social history.
Surplus historical military equipment is given to accredited institutions exclusively.
