President Parmelin meets Indian Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi, announces 2027 AI summit for Geneva
Berna, 19.02.2026 — President Guy Parmelin has met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other heads of state and government at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, where discussions focused on the use and international governance of artificial intelligence. Switzerland remains committed to this debate and will host an AI summit in Geneva in 2027.
On Thursday, 19 February, President Parmelin and Prime Minister Modi discussed trade relations between Switzerland and India. Both sides welcomed the momentum generated since the free trade agreement between the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and India entered into force in autumn 2025. These matters were explored in greater depth during a bilateral meeting with India's Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal.
On the margins of the summit, Mr Parmelin held additional talks with several heads of state and government. He discussed current international issues as well as bilateral relations with Estonian President Alar Karis, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, British Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed Al Nahyan.
Next AI summit in Switzerland
During the summit in New Delhi, President Parmelin announced that Switzerland will host a future edition of the AI summit. The event is scheduled to take place in Geneva in the first half of 2027 and will be organised jointly by the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA).
Switzerland intends to work closely with partners from academia and the private sector. Hosting the AI summit will strengthen Switzerland’s position in digital policy and reaffirm its active commitment to a rules‑based international order. It will also consolidate the country’s role as a leading centre for innovation and research in artificial intelligence.
The summit will offer an important platform for International Geneva to highlight the importance of international law and fundamental rights in the development and deployment of AI. It will also help generate momentum among businesses, civil society and researchers – promoting innovation, deepening exchanges and showcasing the opportunities that AI offers across all areas of Swiss society.
