Lugano proposed as venue for meeting of OSCE Ministerial Council
Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis was welcomed by a plenary session of the Cantonal Council of Ticino today as part of their regular political dialogue. The council's chosen venue, the Mezzana Cantonal Agricultural Organisation, is celebrating its 110th anniversary this year. Discussions focused on topics of mutual interest, including the promotion of Italian language and culture, cross-border relations, and more international matters such as relations with the EU and current geopolitical challenges. Mr Cassis also informed the Cantonal Council of the FDFA's intention to hold the meeting of the OSCE Ministerial Council in Lugano.

Variable remuneration at Credit Suisse: the Confederation appeals to the Federal Supreme Court
The Federal Department of Finance is contesting the decision of the Federal Administrative Court (FAC), which found that the reduction or cancellation of variable remuneration for former members of Credit Suisse management was illegal. The FDF has decided to lodge an appeal with the Federal Supreme Court, which will make a final decision on the matter.
Matthias Sulzer: Building bridges between research and industry
<strong>The ETH Board has appointed Matthias Sulzer as a member of Empa's Directorate. Since January 2025, Sulzer is the Head of Empa's Engineering Sciences Department, where he deals with the full range of materials and technologies for the built environment. The engineer is convinced that research and industry mutually benefit each other – a principle that he has lived by throughout his career in both “worlds”. The real key to success for him, however, is people.</strong>
Culture, a dynamic but atypical working environment
In 2024, there were around 300 000 cultural workers in Switzerland, a figure that has been rising again since the pandemic. A highly educated workforce, cultural workers find themselves in a variety of atypical situations. Over 50% of them work part-time. Multi-activity has become increasingly common since 2010. There are double the number of freelancers among cultural workers than in the rest of the economy. Earnings are also lower. While the Swiss culture sector is thriving, with a record 67 313 enterprises and gross added value of 16.3 billion in 2022, employment in this sector has been falling since 2011. These are the results of an analysis of long-term trends in the cultural economy by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

At its meeting of 21/22 May, the ETH Board appointed Matthias Sulzer as a new Member of the Directorate at Empa and launched the procedure for appointing a new President of ETH Zurich as of 2027.
12 new professors appointed at ETH Zurich and EPFL
At its meeting of 21/22 May 2025 and upon application of the President of ETH Zurich, Professor Joël Mesot, and the President of EPFL, Professor Anna Fontcuberta i Morral, the ETH Board appointed a total of two women and ten men as professors and awarded the title of professor to three individuals and the title of Professor of Practice to two individuals. It also took note of the resignation of 12 professors and thanked them for their services. In the last 12 months, the ETH Board has made a total of 18 new appointments for women and 28 for men; the proportion of women among these new appointments thus amounts to 39%.
Over 8 billion hours worked in 2024
In 2024, 8.117 billion hours were worked in Switzerland, an increase of 0.1% compared with the previous year. Between 2019 and 2024, the actual weekly hours worked by full-time employees fell by 50 minutes on average, to 40 hours and 4 minutes. This is according to the latest results from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

Kosovo's President Vjosa Osmani Sadriu on a state visit to Switzerland
On 21 May, the entire Federal Council welcomed Kosovo's President Vjosa Osmani Sadriu and her husband Prindon Sadriu with military honours in front of the Federal Palace for a state visit. The delegations then held talks on opportunities and prospects for the close and wide-ranging bilateral relationship. They also exchanged views on goals for European stability and prosperity, with particular focus on the situation in the Western Balkans.
Swiss–EU package: chief negotiators initial agreements
The chief negotiators of Switzerland and the EU, Patric Franzen and Richard Szostak, and the Swiss co-negotiators from the relevant federal offices initialled the agreements of the Switzerland–EU package in Bern on 21 May 2025. The initialling formally concluded the negotiation process with the EU. The Federal Council will decide before the summer whether to approve the agreements and open the consultation process, and publish the texts.
Federal Council sets priorities for Switzerland's OSCE chairpersonship in 2026
At its meeting on 21 May 2025, the Federal Council set the thematic priorities for Switzerland's OSCE chairpersonship in 2026. These will be definitively adopted following consultation with the foreign affairs committees of the National Council and the Council of States. The Federal Council also approved the budget for organising the meeting of the OSCE Ministerial Council, which will be held in Switzerland in December 2026.
Federal Council allocates CHF 20 million to occupied Palestinian territory and to UNRWA in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria
At its meeting on 21 May 2025, the Federal Council decided to grant CHF 9 million to four humanitarian organisations to support Palestinians affected by the conflict in the occupied Palestinian territory. A further CHF 10 million will be allocated to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) for its programme in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. CHF 1 million will also be earmarked to implement the Colonna report's recommendations for reinforcing UNRWA's impartiality.
Federal Council to strengthen SIFEM AG with additional share capital
On 21 May, the Federal Council decided to increase the capital of SIFEM AG by CHF 75 million. This will enable the federal development finance institution to stabilise its investment volume at CHF 150 million.
Federal Council launches consultation on amending insurance oversight law
The Federal Council wishes to strengthen Switzerland as a reinsurance location. To this end, it initiated a consultation on amending insurance oversight law during its meeting on 21 May 2025.
Excessive commission rates by Booking.com – Price Supervisor orders reduction
The Price Supervisor has ruled that Booking.com B.V. must reduce its prices in Switzerland. Its analysis showed that the company's commission rates for Swiss hotels are too high and must therefore be reduced by almost a quarter. The reduction must be implemented three months after the ruling becomes final and will apply for three years. The ruling was necessary because the parties could not reach an agreement.
Increasing cyber defence: Switzerland takes part in the PESCO project “Cyber Ranges Federation”
Switzerland will take part in the European PESCO project “Cyber Ranges Federation”. The EU Council approved participation today. The goal of the project is to network national cyber training infrastructures with each other to enable realistic, ambitious and efficient training in the area of cyber defence.

The fourth edition of the Point Zero Forum concluded in Zurich after three days of high-level dialogue, insight-sharing and collaboration with Switzerland and Singapore, jointly reinforcing their commitment to global financial transformation grounded in trust, inclusion and innovation. Jointly hosted by the Swiss State Secretariat for International Finance (SIF) and the Global Finance & Technology Network (GFTN), the Forum convened 1,350 global leaders from 66 countries, including central bankers, regulators, policymakers, technologists, entrepreneurs, and academics from across Europe and around the world.

Switzerland’s expertise in cultural property protection receives international recognition
Switzerland was elected for the first time today in Paris to the Subsidiary Committee for the implementation of the UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property for the 2025–2029 term. This election is an acknowledgement of Switzerland’s longstanding commitment to combating the illegal trade in cultural property and for the preservation of these goods within the framework of international cooperation.
Nanomedicine for treatment of inflammation in pregnancy - Safe medication for mother and child
Special care must be taken with illnesses during pregnancy, as not all drugs are compatible for mother and child. This is why an international research team involving Empa is now developing nanomedicines that will enable safe and effective treatment of inflammatory processes during pregnancy. Pregnancy complications are often caused or accompanied by inflammation, but the treatment options are often not sufficiently effective or are suspected of interfering with the development of the foetus.
Short unconditional custodial sentences fall by half
In 2024, the total number of convictions remained stable compared with the previous year, with 111 148 convictions recorded in the register of criminal convictions. However, the trends differed depending on the applicable law. There was a decrease in the number of convictions under the Swiss Criminal Code (−6%) and the Narcotics Act (−10%), whereas convictions under the Federal Act on Foreign Nationals and Integration increased by 17 per cent. Fines remain the most common form of sanction and their application increased further in 2024, while the number of short unconditional custodial sentences fell by 48 per cent. These are some of the findings of the Criminal Conviction Statistics produced by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

On Monday 19 May 2025, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis received Luca Beccari, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Political Affairs, International Economic Cooperation and Digital Transition of the Republic of San Marino, who was on an official working visit, at Münchenwiler Castle in the canton of Bern. The highlight of the visit was the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and San Marino. An agreement on the exchange of young professionals was also signed.
World Health Assembly in Geneva opened by Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider
In her opening address to the 78th World Health Assembly (WHA) on Monday, 19 May 2025, Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider underlined the importance of a fully capable and sustainably financed WHO in combating the spread of international diseases and ensuring access to good-quality healthcare for all countries. In this context, the WHA will on Tuesday consider the Pandemic Agreement, now ready for adoption. The Federal Councillor will also take the opportunity offered by the WHA to hold bilateral talks with various health ministers.
Swissmedic and Swedish partner authority agree on closer collaboration in therapeutic products field
Today, Ann Lindberg, Director-General of the Swedish Medical Products Agency (MPA), and Raimund Bruhin, Executive Director of Swissmedic, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU). The agreement creates a formal framework for closer cooperation on regulatory issues associated with medicinal products and medical devices.

The new silver coin from Swissmint marks the 100th birthday of the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely. The CHF 20 special coin celebrates the creations of this influential 20th-century artist, and will be available from 22 May 2025.
Health in Switzerland: gender health disparities
The results of the Swiss Health Survey 2022 (SHS22) show clear differences in men's and women's health. For example, more women report living with at least one chronic illness (55% compared with 44% of men). On the other hand, the prevalence of overweight (including obesity) is higher among men than among women (52% vs. 34%). Smoking is also more common among men (27% vs. 21%). The new publication by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) highlights that, in addition to factors related to biological sex, the gender roles assigned to men and women in society also affect their health and reinforce social inequalities.
Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis receives Costa Rican foreign minister André in Bern to discuss geopolitics, trade and democracy
On 16 May 2025 Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis received the foreign minister of Costa Rica, Arnoldo André Tinoco, for bilateral talks in Bern. The meeting focused on current geopolitical and trade policy challenges as well as bilateral issues. The visit follows Mr Cassis' trip to Costa Rica in July 2024, the first by a federal councillor. Switzerland and Costa Rica are celebrating 160 years of bilateral relations in 2025.
President Keller-Sutter attends sixth European Political Community Summit in Tirana
On 16 May, in the Albanian capital Tirana, President Karin Keller-Sutter attended the sixth summit of the European Political Community (EPC). With Denmark set to hold the EU Council Presidency in the second half of the year, she met with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The summit focused on Europe’s competitiveness, democratic resilience and security.

The number of employed persons rose by 0.7% and the unemployment rate (ILO) rose to 4.7% in the 1st quarter 2025
In the 1st quarter 2025, the number of employed persons in Switzerland rose by 0.7% compared with the same quarter of the previous year. During the same period, the unemployment rate as defined by the International Labour Organization (ILO) rose to 4.7% in Switzerland and fell to 6.1% in the European Union. These are some of the results of the Swiss Labour Force Survey (SLFS) conducted by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

Civil aviation: 2024 Annual Safety Report published
The Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) processed over 12,500 incident reports in 2024 – significantly more than in previous years, as detailed in the recently published Annual Safety Report. Incident reports contribute to the ongoing improvement of safety on the ground and in the air. Last year, there was one fatal accident in commercial aviation in Switzerland.
GDP flash for the first quarter of 2025: Swiss economic growth above average
According to the early estimate of Switzerland's quarterly real GDP around 45 days after the end of the quarter ('GDP flash'), Swiss economic output is estimated to have increased by 0.7% in the first quarter of 2025 (Adjusted for seasonal/calendar effects and sporting events). This growth was driven significantly by the services sector, with industry also showing overall expansion. <br><br><strong>Notes:</strong> The flash estimate is based on early information available on the production components of GDP. Estimates are used where values are not yet available. The result may therefore change after the complete and updated source data become available. The regular release of quarterly GDP figures, including details on production, expenditure and income as well as updated calculations for the previous quarters, will be published on 2 June 2025.
Producer and Import Price Index rose by 0.1% in April
The Producer and Import Price Index increased in April 2025 by 0.1% compared with the previous month, reaching 106.9 points (December 2020 = 100). Prices rose for machinery in particular. In contrast, petroleum and natural gas became cheaper. Compared with April 2024, the price level of the whole range of domestic and imported products fell by 0.5%. These are the results of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
Committee of Ministers: FDFA State Secretary Alexandre Fasel underlines Switzerland's support for Council of Europe values
FDFA State Secretary Alexandre Fasel was in Luxembourg on 13 and 14 May, representing Switzerland at the 134th session of the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers. The discussions, which were chaired by Luxembourg, focused on the Council of Europe's response to the war against Ukraine and democratic backsliding.
Ukraine: Federal Council implements 16th EU sanctions package against Russia
The Federal Council decided on 14 May 2025 that Switzerland will adopt the measures in the European Union’s 16th package of sanctions against Russia, with effect from 15 May 2025. 48 individuals, 35 entities and 74 vessels were already added to the Swiss sanctions list against Russia on 4 March. The Federal Council is also extending Swiss sanctions against Belarus.
Swiss–EU package: all Federal Assembly members given access to Swiss–EU agreement texts
At its meeting on 14 May 2025, the Federal Council decided to give members of the Federal Assembly access, upon request, to the texts of the agreements negotiated with the EU. In making this decision, it is responding to the exceptionally high level of interest shown by Parliament in the Swiss–EU dossier. The Federal Council intends to make a decision before the summer recess on launching the consultation procedure. In this context, the texts of the agreements, applicable implementing legislation, and accompanying national measures will be published in three official languages, as previously planned.

The Swiss Confederation issued a bond by auction on 14.05.2025: 0.50%, maturity 28.05.2040 (new bond. The issuance volume (excluding own holdings) amounts to a total of 302.700 million francs.
Federal Council adopts dispatch on new Federal Act on the International Automatic Exchange of Information on Salary Data
During its meeting on 14 May 2025, the Federal Council adopted the dispatch on the international automatic exchange of information on salary data. The Federal Council is thus laying the legal foundations for implementing the exchange of information set down in agreements with France and Italy.
First implementation report on the National Cyberstrategy
At its meeting on 14 May the Federal Council took note of the first implementation report on the National Cyberstrategy (NCS). The report outlines the status of national efforts to strengthen cybersecurity. It was prepared by the NCS Steering Committee in collaboration with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). The report clearly shows that progress has been made: key coordination structures have been established, ongoing projects implemented and new ones launched, and Switzerland’s international profile in the field of cybersecurity has been raised.
Private security services provided abroad in 2024: ninth FDFA report on PSSA implementation
At its meeting on 14 May 2025, the Federal Council took note of the ninth annual report on the implementation of the Federal Act on Private Security Services Provided Abroad (PSSA). In 2024, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) received 111 declarations from companies. No activities were prohibited.
Simplified destruction of counterfeits in small consignments
In the future, it will be easier to destroy counterfeit products entering Switzerland in small consignments. The Federal Council adopted the Ordinance to the Federal Act on the Introduction of a Simplified Procedure for Destroying Small Consignments in Intellectual Property Law at its meeting on 14 May 2025. The new legal bases will come into force on 1 July 2025.

On 14 May, the Federal Council elected Anja Isabella König, Global Head of the Novartis Venture Fund, as a member of the Innosuisse Board. She will take up her role on 1 June.
Using AI to identify genetic perturbations from cell images
Researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institute PSI have developed an AI that could open up a new, cost-effective approach to identifying genetic perturbation patterns in cell images – potentially enabling the development of new drugs.
Second edition of Global Conference on Cyber Capacity Building held in Geneva
Switzerland hosted the second edition of the Global Conference on Cyber Capacity Building (GC3B) between 13 and 14 May. The conference focused on the secure use of new digital technologies in development cooperation work, especially in the Global South. International Geneva served as a platform to bring together stakeholders from the cybersecurity and digital development sectors. The GC3B was also a key event of the inaugural Geneva Cyber Week.
SECO: Ordinance on measures against Myanmar
On 12 May 2025 the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research EAER has amended annex 1 of the ordinance on measures against Myanmar. The entries concerning 14 individuals have been modified. The measures come into force on 14 May 2025.
Federal Councillor Martin Pfister to attend UN Peacekeeping Ministerial in Berlin
On 13 May, Federal Councillor Martin Pfister, Head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS), will attend the United Nations (UN) Peacekeeping Ministerial conference in Berlin. Markus Mäder, State Secretary for Security Policy, will also attend. The conference will focus on issues in security policy and international cooperation on future peacekeeping activities. On the fringes of the conference, Mr Pfister will meet with German defence minister Boris Pistorius and Italian defence minister Guido Crosetto.
President Keller-Sutter to travel to Rome for inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV
President Karin Keller-Sutter will represent Switzerland at the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV in Rome on Sunday, 18 May. She has already sent a letter of congratulations to the new head of the Catholic Church on behalf of the Federal Council.
Nature's fiber composite: Researchers develop living material from fungi
<strong>Fungi are considered a promising source of biodegradable materials. Empa researchers have developed a new material based on a fungal mycelium and its own extracellular matrix. This gives the biomaterial particularly advantageous properties.</strong>
Digital platform services are not very common in Switzerland
In 2024, 0.9% of the population said that they had performed digital platform services in the last 12 months. This is where the person performing a service is connected to a client via an internet platform. By type of activity, 0.2% of the population had undertaken digital platform employment in the narrower sense (taxi services, food delivery services, programming, etc.), 0.4% had rented out accommodation via an internet platform and 0.2% had sold goods that they intentionally collected, bought or produced for sale on an internet platform. These are the findings of the Swiss Labour Force Survey (SLFS) conducted by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
Farm structure census 2024 – Organic farming loses momentum in 2024
In 2024, there were 47 075 farms in Switzerland, 1.3% fewer than the previous year. Organic farming also lost its momentum, with the number of organic farms ceasing to grow for the first time since 2010. Trends in livestock numbers varied. The number of dairy cows and pigs fell, while poultry numbers remained stable. These results are taken from the Farm Structure Survey conducted by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

President Keller-Sutter to attend European Political Community Summit in Tirana
On 16 May, in the Albanian capital Tirana, President of the Swiss Confederation Karin Keller-Sutter will represent Switzerland at the sixth summit of the European Political Community. Heads of state and government from around 45 countries across the continent are expected to attend, along with representatives of EU institutions and other European organisations.
Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis receives Foreign Minister Sabine Monauni from Liechtenstein
Mr Cassis received Liechtenstein's new deputy prime minister and minister for foreign affairs, environment and culture, Sabine Monauni, for an official inaugural visit in Bern on Monday. Talks focused on the two countries' traditionally close bilateral relations, European policy, regional cooperation under the EU Strategy for the Alpine region (EUSALP), international issues and the current geopolitical context. The two ministers also signed a revised agreement on environmental levies.

At World Expo 2025 in Osaka (Japan), the Federal Institute of Metrology METAS and the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss will present the latest advances in pollen information in collaboration with Swisens AG. The exhibition stand in the Swiss pavilion will present the latest developments as well as the real-time pollen load measured at the National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ) in Tsukuba.
Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin on a working visit to Poland
Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin will visit Poland on 14 and 15 May. During his visit he will sign a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation in education, research and innovation (ERI). Bilateral ministerial meetings are also planned, focusing on ERI and business. The programme will conclude with a visit to the renowned Impact'25 innovation fair.

State Secretary Martina Hirayama on a science mission in the Gulf States
From 12 to 16 May, Martina Hirayama, State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation, will travel to Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on a science mission. This trip is intended primarily to strengthen existing partnerships and explore opportunities for further collaboration in research and innovation.
30% more births on weekdays than on weekends
On average, 237 babies were born each weekday in 2023 in Swiss hospitals, compared with 181 at the weekend. Friday was the day with the most births (16% of the total) and Sunday was the day with the fewest (11%). These figures highlight practices that influence the moment of birth, especially primary caesarean sections, 94% of which are scheduled on a weekday, and induced labour. In 2023, out of a total of 79 200 births there were 14 626 primary caesarean sections and 21 342 inductions of labour.
International trade: Karin Keller-Sutter and Guy Parmelin hold meetings with delegations from the United States and China
On Friday, 9 May 2025 in Geneva, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Karin Keller-Sutter, and the Vice President of the Federal Council, Guy Parmelin, met with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Prior to that, they met with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.

Federal councillors Ignazio Cassis and Elisabeth Baume-Schneider announced in Venice today the future set-up for the Palazzo Trevisan. As of 1 January 2026, the main floor of the palace will be turned into a platform managed by the FDFA which will not only build on the palace's important role in promoting Swiss culture but will also incorporate new activities in the fields of innovation, research and sustainability. This development is the result of collaboration between the FDFA and the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA), with the dual aim of strengthening the Palazzo Trevisan as a vector of Swiss excellence in Venice, and of further enriching the dense network of relations between Switzerland and Italy.
Direct rail connection between Switzerland and London: Parties sign Memorandum of Understanding
Federal Councillor Albert Rösti, head of the Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC), met the UK’s Secretary of State for Transport Heidi Alexander in London on 8 May. They signed a joint memorandum of understanding on increased cooperation in international rail passenger transport. The aim of the MoU is to establish a direct railway link between Switzerland and the UK.

International cooperation: targeted Swiss support for UN agencies and International Geneva
Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis has decided the FDFA will grant CHF 39 million to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), UN Women, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for 2025. By renewing these contributions, the FDFA is also sending out a strong signal in support of International Geneva.

<strong>Net zero: the goal that moves our society at all levels. But what can we as individuals contribute to achieve it? Answers are given by the Emission Explorer, the new exhibit developed by Empa as part of Energy Science for Tomorrow (ES4T), a joint initiative of the ETH Domain and the Swiss Museum of Transport. Cross-border cyberthreats require international solutions
The latest semi-annual report from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) outlines how cybercriminals operate internationally and the methods they use for their attacks. In light of these global cyberthreats and our ever-growing dependence on global software, international cooperation is becoming increasingly important. To strengthen cybersecurity in Switzerland, a reporting obligation for cyberattacks on critical infrastructure came into force on 1 April. This was developed in close alignment with international standards and EU directives.

DDPS and other federal departments to provide security support for Eurovision Song Contest in Basel
From 11 to 17 May, Basel will host the Eurovision Song Contest, a major event that will see extensive support from various agencies of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport, the Federal Office of Police, and the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security. These agencies will work alongside the organisers and cantonal authorities to ensure the security of the event, with the Confederation making a crucial contribution to public safety.
Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin to visit Bulgaria

Consumer prices remained stable in April
The consumer price index (CPI) remained unchanged in April 2025 compared with the previous month, at 107.5 points (December 2020 = 100). Inflation was +0.0% compared with the same month of the previous year. These are the results of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
Nanomaterials under tension: Empa researcher among the winners at SNSF scientific image competition
<strong>Researchers at Empa and ETH Zurich are developing an electromechanical system that can apply mechanical tension to nanomaterials. This could enable electronic components with novel properties for applications in various quantum technologies, for example in information technology, communication, sensor technology and efficient energy conversion. For the video showing the moving system in action, Empa researcher Peter Lendway was awarded first prize in the SNSF scientific image competition in the video category.</strong>
Energy perspectives for the city of Frauenfeld: Digital solutions pave the way to net-zero
After a two year-project, Thurplus, the city of Frauenfelds's utility company, and Empa last Wednesday presented the report, Energy Perspectives 2050. The project sheds light on energy scenarios from today to 2050, extrapolated from around 20,000 smart meter data sets. The conclusion of the study: Net zero is feasible – the key lies in district heating and replacing conventional, fossil heating systems.
Meeting between the federal and cantonal authorities to promote gender equality
<strong></strong>The first executive level meeting on gender equality between the federal government and the cantons took place today in Bern. On the initiative of Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, the cantonal councillors responsible for gender equality in Switzerland met to strengthen their cooperation and reaffirm their political commitment to an inclusive and equal society. The prevention of gender-based violence was a further priority topic at the meeting.
Residential property prices increased by 0.7% in 1st quarter 2025
The Swiss Residential Property Price Index (IMPI) rose in the 1st quarter 2025 by 0.7% compared with the previous quarter and reached 121.1 points (4th quarter 2019 = 100). Compared with the same quarter of the previous year, inflation was 4.1%. These are some of the results from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

Swiss–EU package: Federal Council calls for optional referendum
On 30 April 2025, the Federal Council took stock of the ongoing work on the Swiss–EU package. It decided to call an optional referendum on the agreements with the European Union (EU). In taking this decision, the Federal Council is signalling political continuity and coherence and giving Parliament and the cantons room for manoeuvre. Parliament will ultimately determine the nature of the referendum in the course of its deliberations.
Federal Council appoints Rainer Schulz as new Chairman of the Board of Directors of RUAG International
During its meeting on 30 April 2025, the Federal Council decided to appoint Rainer Schulz as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors of RUAG International Holding AG. He is currently Vice Chairman. His election will take place at the Annual General Meeting on 20 May 2025.
Patents Ordinance to be adapted and modernised in line with revised Patents Act
The Federal Council opened the consultation on the complete revision of the Patents Ordinance on 30 April 2025. The revision is necessary because the Federal Assembly passed a partial revision of the Patents Act in March 2024. The Federal Council is using this opportunity to completely revise and modernise the currently applicable ordinance, which has been in force since 1978. The consultation period will run until 22 August 2025.
The Federal Council defines guidelines for expanding the supply of medical devices
At its meeting on 30 April 2025, the Federal Council noted the ongoing efforts to implement Motion 20.3211, which aims to open the possibility for medical devices from non-European regulatory systems to be placed on the Swiss market. In order to ensure adequate supplies of medical devices and to guarantee patient safety, the Federal Council defined guidelines and will assign responsibility for controls to private bodies.
Support for the media: Federal Council welcomes measures that can be implemented quickly
Independent and diversified media play a key role in a democratic society. The Federal Council therefore welcomes the targeted increase in support for electronic media as proposed by the Council of States Transport and Telecommunications Committee. At its meeting on 30 April, the Federal Council adopted its opinion on the committee report in which it requests Parliament to approve the Committee's draft bill.

Switzerland steps up its support for Africa
The Federal Council wants to contribute towards increasing the guarantee capital of the African Development Bank (AfDB). It is requesting Parliament to approve a guarantee credit of CHF 1.56 billion, as decided on 30 April. This would strengthen Switzerland's influence in the AfDB and help to further sustainable and inclusive economic development in Africa.
