Research mandate «Homosexuality in the Swiss Armed Forces»
Research project "Scientific reappraisal of the discrimination of homosexual people in the Swiss Armed Forces"
Postulate 21.4220 (submitted by Priska Seiler Graf, link available in German, French, and Italian) calls for a reappraisal of the injustices possibly committed against homosexual men and women in the Swiss Armed Forces. After the Federal Council requested the postulate in March 2022 for adoption, it was passed by the National Council with 132 votes in favour, 52 against and 7 abstentions. In May 2022, the Chief of the Armed Forces assigned the implementation planning to the Specialised Office for Women in the Armed Forces and Diversity.
The possible injustice is to be investigated independently and scientifically. The Interdisciplinary Centre for Gender Research (ICFG) at the University of Bern was commissioned to carry out the study following a public call for tenders. In a four-year project, the research team is investigating whether homosexuals in the Swiss Armed Forces experienced individual or systematic injustice between 1942 and 2020 and what consequences this had for those affected.
The research report is expected to be published in autumn 2027.
