Senior staff officers
are career officers in the rank of brigadier, major general or lieutenant general. They are appointed by the Federal Council under special contractual terms from the federal government as their employer. The General is elected by the Federal Assembly as soon as a widespread military call-up is foreseen or announced. Senior staff officers occupy key command appointments and central staff functions.
