CISM

The Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) is the international military sports federation based in Brussels. Based on the pillars of sport and solidarity, the CISM and a large number of its 140 member countries have been organising sporting events for armies from all over the world since its foundation in 1948.

The associated encounters between members of the armed forces from different countries create friendships and promote better understanding between nations. Instead of going to war, soldiers should meet to test their athletic strength - true to the CISM motto «friendship through sport».

The aim is also to promote physical fitness and increase the readiness of the armed forces.

Switzerland has been a member of the CISM since 1968. Swiss athletes who are part of the armed forces' top sports promotion regularly take part in military competitions at home and abroad - currently in eleven summer and winter sports.

The Swiss CISM delegation is represented in the following sports/disciplines:

In addition to the annual world championships in the individual sports disciplines, the World Football Cup and the World Cadet Games, which were introduced in 2010, the CISM also organises major multi-sport events in the form of the Summer and Winter World Military Games. Like the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, the latter are organised every four years and are based on the spirit of the CISM and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The Swiss delegation not only takes part in competitions, but has also regularly organised events in its own country since joining the CISM World Federation as the fifth CISM Military World Winter Games 2025.
