Armed Forces Logistics Organisation
The Armed Forces Logistics Organisation (AFLO) employs around 3,000 people and has 12,000 conscript staff. It is responsible for supplying the Swiss Armed Forces with equipment, vehicles and infrastructure for training and operations. Ensuring that this materiel is in good working order means that the Swiss Armed Forces are ready for action at all times.
As part of Vision 2030, the AFLO is continuously enhancing its logistical capabilities to meet the future needs of the armed forces in training, operations, and crisis situations.
AFLO handles all of the Armed Forces' logistics requirements. It supplies equipment, vehicles and infrastructure and ensures these are ready for operation. In addition, it develops logistics policy, is responsible for troop catering, and oversees the life cycle of systems, from procurement to decommissioning.
Its other tasks include operating military infrastructure, processing vehicle and driver licences, and providing transport services for the DDPS and the Armed Forces. This includes managing official vehicles and deploying federal government drivers..png?w=1024&auto=format)

Other units include the Medical Services, the Armed Forces Pharmacy, Logistics Brigade 1, Logistics Coordination, the Long-term Development and Resources division, and the Defence Support Services. These units perform additional logistical, technical and administrative tasks on behalf of the Armed Forces.
The five AFLCs in Hinwil, Othmarsingen, Thun, Monteceneri and Grolley ensure that military personnel are always well equipped, both during training and on deployment. The AFLCs' key tasks include:
– providing equipment for conscript staff
– collecting equipment again from troops after use
– restocking operational and training supplies (e.g. vehicles, ammunition, fuel, food and textiles).
The AFLCs have numerous field offices, local warehouses and underground facilities.
The AFLC Thun is also the central supply centre for AFLO. It is responsible for supplying general technical equipment, spare parts, ammunition, food, textiles, fuel and lubricants.
The Gotthard Fire and Emergency Response Unit, which is part of the AFLC Monteceneri, is a special AFLO division. It is responsible for safety in the Gotthard road tunnel on behalf of the Federal Office for Roads (FEDRO). It also processes applications for the transportation of special consignments on the Swiss road network. The five AFLCs and their field offices store and service equipment, vehicles, ammunition, fuel, food and textiles. They ensure that all materiel is ready for use and issued before training or deployment, and collected afterwards. In addition to the AFLCs, AFLO comprises other organisational units that provide the Armed Forces with additional logistical, technical and administrative services.

Armed Forces Logistics Centre Areas of Responsibility Switzerland Healthcare is a key part of AFLO's activities. The Armed Forces Pharmacy is both a centre of expertise for healthcare matters and a distribution centre for medical supplies for the Armed Forces. The Medical Services unit is an integral part of the Swiss healthcare system, providing medical care to people and animals in the Armed Forces.
AFLO's Defence Support Services unit performs cross-sectional and support tasks for the entire Swiss Armed Forces Defence Group. The unit consists of the Armed Forces Road Traffic and Shipping Office (RTSOA), which is responsible for the registration of military vehicles, ships and driving licences, and the Armed Forces Digital Media (AFDM) section, which develops and produces training and information resources for the Armed Forces.
Logistics Brigade 1 comprises 12,000 conscript personnel who support the basic services provided by the AFLCs. In the event of an emergency, they also support the civilian healthcare system. Logistics Brigade 1 is made up of battalions and single-term conscript units, including specialists in the fields of logistics, medical services, infrastructure, traffic, transport and pharmaceutics.
Alongside AFLO Staff, the Logistics Coordination division forms the main element of the Armed Forces logistics services. It defines logistics requirements, manages processes, and ensures integral security within AFLO.
As part of the command staff, it plans and controls all logistics operations for the troops, working alongside civilian partners. Its advisory and support services are aimed at the troops and career service members. The Long-Term Development and Resources division is responsible for the strategic and sustainable development of AFLO, ensuring its operational performance, economic efficiency and future viability.
To this end, it plans, coordinates, and manages key areas such as resources and finance, corporate development, IT, and business management and logistics systems. This division also manages projects and matters relating to strategy, further development, and doctrine, with system management playing a key role.
