Swiss Armed Forces

Organisation and structure

As commander subsidiary security operation (CSSO) EURO 08, Major Gen Peter Stutz, Chief of the Armed Forces Joint Staff, leads the military operation. Assigned to the CSSO are:

  • The task force ground commanded by Major General Eugen Hofmeister, Commander of Territorial Region 2.
  • The task force air under the command of Major General Markus Gygax, Air Force Operations Chief and Deputy Commander Air Force.

The CSSO can also fall back on the interdisciplinary services of

  • the Armed Forces Command Support Organisation (AFCSO)
  • the Armed Forces Logistics Organisation (AFLO) and
  • joint resources. These include the services of
    - the NBC Centre of Competence
    - the engineering elements of the land forces for assembly and dismantling
    - as well as parts of the Military Security organisation.

The relevant civilian authorities and agencies at the locations of the matches are contacted via the cantonal territorial liaison staffs (CTLS).

Ten battalions will be called up that are specialised in command support (radar, LOS, transmission and reconnaissance), three infantry battalions and two logistic battalions. In addition, there will be medical, transport, traffic and military security detachments and dog handlers, several military staffs as well as air transport and air reconnaissance assets. This will result in a theoretical total personnel strength of approx. 13,000. This maximum will be briefly reached during the EURO 08 only once when the forces rotate. The reason for this peak is the normal refresher course duration of three weeks for the majority of the armed forces; troops will be rotated in the 25th calendar week.
