Participation in UNMEE goes back to an informatory note of 24 September 1999 by the head of the DDPS to the members of the Federal Council. From October 2000 to October 2007, no more than four Swiss military observers served in this mission. Because of restrictions imposed by the Eritrean government, military observers were less and less able to fulfil their mission satisfactorily, the UN Security Council decided therefore on 30 July 2008 with Resolution 1827 to extend the mandate no longer. The last of the four Swiss military observers had already returned to Switzerland before the mission ended in October 2007.
