The tasks of the armed forces
Switzerland has been enjoying peace, security and freedom for many years: from the freedom of movement for all citizens and the freedom of expression to economic freedom. Preserving this security in our country for the long-term is the mission of our security policy. The Swiss Armed Forces form part of it. The Federal Constitution and the Military Act assign the following three missions to the armed forces:
- Defence
- Support of the civilian authorities
- Promotion of peace within an international context
Defence against an armed attack, whether on the ground or in the air, is the central mission of the armed forces. As this it is extremely unlikely today, constant readiness for a war is not required. The armed forces must, however, be capable of protecting important installations and traffic routes in the event of a threat. Finally, the Armed Forces must be able to adapt in good time to an emerging threat. As a neutral state, Switzerland does not belong to any defensive alliance. But for training purposes our armed forces are able to cooperate with other states.
Support of the civilian authorities when their resources are no longer sufficient: the focus is on mastering emergencies and safeguarding inner security. The armed forces assist the police in protecting international conferences or major events. In the event of a catastrophe, the armed forces are on location within hours to assist the fire brigade, the medical services and the civil defence organisation.
Peace support within an international context: the armed forces are engaged for security and peace abroad. Under the mandate of international organisations they help to rebuild a stable order in other countries after wars and crises. A more peaceful world is beneficial for Switzerland too.
