Who can become military chaplain?

The military chaplains of the Swiss Armed Forces are principally recruited from the Protestant and Catholic State Churches.

Every military chaplain is personally involved in proposing prospective military chaplains and, as far as entitled, each church as well.

The requirements for nomination as field chaplain are:

  • Completion of recruit school or specialised basic military training of at least 47 days duration prior to nomination
  • recognized clergymen or theologians with academic title or equivalent theological training and recognition or ordination by the respective church authority as vicar, priest, deacon or pastoral assistant
  • recommendation by the respective church authority
