Aim and purpose
The Military Real Estate Management (REM) agency controls and manages the extensive holdings of all kinds of military objects.
Thus, the purpose of REM is to ensure that the armed forces have real estate at their disposal
The REM also separates the core holdings from liquidation stocks and ensures best possible utilisation of property and real estate that is no longer required.

DDPS Real Estate Project
Within the context of the DDPS XXI Real Estate project, procedures, structures and competencies of real estate management are being reorganised. Preliminary structural adjustments have been introduced by the end of 2003. The bulk of REM has already been subordinated to armasuisse by the end of November 2003.
An element of the Military Real Estate (MRE) division will remain in the Planning Staff for accomplishing the strategic tenant tasks for the Defence sector.
The role of the professional real estate operating company for the Defence sector will be transferred to the Armed Forces Logistics Organisation (AFLO).

The Armed Forces Planning Staff adopts the strategic tenant role for the defence sector
- as part of its DDPS real estate management, it plays its role as strategic tenant and coordinates the operational tenants for the Defence sector
- it establishes planning relating to real estate (multi-year and annual target planning) as well as respective dispatch and budget planning
- issues appropriation and payment credits (for investments and rents) at the operational level and controls these
- controls requirement planning of operational tenants and ensures that the planning results are processed according to the decisions made
- controls utilisation planning of operational tenants and ensures that the results of planning are processed according to the decisions made
- issues on the basis of approved usage concepts, assignments for implementation planning and controls these (from case-to case up to special individual projects)
- controls rental agreements between operational tenants and owner representatives
- safeguards its interests as strategic tenant towards third parties.
