Support (J4/6)
The specialist areas logistics and command support have been merged into the "Support" organisational unit.
Logistics
The joint functional area 4 provides the Armed Forces Joint Staff with logistic expertise. It defines the logistic benchmarks for basic and operational readiness of the armed forces. Its areas of responsibility include planning of overall military performance and supervision of logistic readiness. With regard to planning and conduct of operations, J4 safeguards planning and control of logistics and assesses the logistic feasibility of planned and running operations of the armed forces. This includes cooperation with the bodies of the Coordinated Medical Services (CMS) at the operational level.
Furthermore J6 is responsible as operational tenant for the building infrastructure of command & control installations and combat facilities as well as centres of competence and recruitment centres. Its duties are completed with its involvement in logistics training of intermediary and senior military leaders and in developing military logistics further.
Command Support
Coordinating staff area 6 provides the expertise for command support in the AFJS. It includes all measures and resources that guarantee command and control capability within the Defence sector - for example running command and control installations as well as command and telematics systems. J4/6 is in charge of planning and conducting operations that relate to command support resources during armed forces operations in Switzerland and abroad. Therefore, J6 also defines basic readiness for the Armed Forces Command Support Organisation, our central service provider that integrates all the services required. It manages the IT of the headquarters of the armed forces (Armed Forces Staff and AFJS).
In command support procurement projects, J6 safeguards the interests of the forces. It analyses experiences and helps to establish a command support doctrine which are incorporated into the training of specialist training units. In particular, J6 elaborates the directives for unit training of signal and command support units.
