The NBC (Nuclear Biological Chemical) Competence Centre of the armed forces with its organisational units NBC Defence School, Operational Doctrine, Armed Forces Environmental Protection Training and the Business Management division, ensures operational readiness of the armed forces NBC resources. Within the coming years, it will complete establishment of the new branch NBC defence forces as initiated on 1 January 2004. Apart from managing the armed forces NBC defence, its task has been to draft the principles for the forces' mission accomplishment under NBC conditions as well as instructions for the basic and operational readiness of all armed forces resources. Additional tasks are the establishment of directives for NBC training of all branches and services, schools and courses of the NBC defence forces, the appraisal of NBC training requirements for civilian partners and the conduct of training courses in Switzerland and abroad. In cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) and the armed forces command, the directives for environmental protection training of the armed forces as well as the training for environmental protection officers of the armed forces have to be worked out.
«Security through competence» is the guiding principle for the NBC Centre of Competence staff and the NBC defence corps members constantly spurring them on to top performances.

The NBC Centre of Competence

Mission:
- To ensure the permanent operational readiness of the military NBC defence resources
- To convert the former NBC protection organisation into the NBC defence organisation
- To provide environmental protection training for the armed forces.
Long-term objectives:
- To further develop and reorganise the existing operational elements, i.e. the DDPS Operations Team (EEVBS) and the Radioactivity Monitoring Team (MORA), into a single operational element for the entire NBC area
- To expand the NBC defence corps
- To achieve NBC interoperability
- To ensure interoperable missions with respect to NBC cooperation
- To further develop NBC defence doctrine (2011ff) in cooperation with partners from abroad
- To consolidate the centre as the NBC centre of competence within the context of national NBC protection.
Tasks:
- To take the lead on NBC defence for the Swiss Armed Forces
- To implement the directives on NBC threats/risks of the strategic and military intelligence services and the Spiez Laboratory for training at the NBC Centre of Competence
- To work out the foundations according to which the forces accomplish their missions under NBC conditions and ensure that these measures are implemented
- To support the Chief of the Armed Forces Joint Staff in advising the Chief of the Armed Forces with respect to all operational NBC and environmental protection training issues, and to prepare prerequisites for decision-making
- To produce directives for basic and operational readiness for all Swiss Armed Forces NBC resources and to exercise command over the NBC defence units
- To guarantee the permanent operational readiness of the NBC resources on behalf of the civilian authorities for operations within Switzerland and abroad within the context of national and international cooperation
- To represent the NBC interests of the armed forces in interdepartmental bodies
- To lay down NBC training directives for all service branches and for the two single services and to take responsibility for planning and conducting all NBC defence corps schools and courses as well as for all-arms NBC defence courses
- To establish the NBC training requirements of our civilian partners and to conduct the respective courses (national and international)
- To coordinate cooperation with all authorities concerned with NBC issues during armed forces operations
- To draw up directives in cooperation with the General Secretariat of the DDPS and Armed Forces Command on environmental protection training for the two single services and all service branches, and to train the military environmental protection representatives.
