The debt crisis in Europe and the Arab Spring have also influenced security in Switzerland. Swiss national presides the scientific advisory board of the OPCW
On 16 April, Stefan Mogl, head of the chemistry department of the SPIEZ LABORATORY, was elected as chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The OPCW is responsible for the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention that pursues the destruction and non-proliferation of chemical weapons. Switzerland has chairmanship in the scientific advisory board for the first time and is thus able to actively contribute to developments in this important disarmament treaty. |

From 16 to 20 April Switzerland hosts the „Session Européenne des Résponsables de l’Armament“ (SERA) in Berne. In the armament policy domain SERA is an important international event for Switzerland. Signature of cooperation framework between the European Defence Agency (EDA) and Switzerland
Switzerland and the European Defence Agency (EDA) want to cooperate in the armaments sector. A corresponding cooperation framework was signed in Brussels today. The framework without legal commitment enables Switzerland to recognise armaments policy developments at an early stage, and to access multilateral armaments cooperation in Europe. Switzerland is free to decide what information it wants to exchange with the EDA and in what projects and programs it wishes to participate. |

The Federal Council approves the Dispatch to Parliament on the protection of the Swiss Embassy in Tripoli
On 18 January 2012, the Federal Council approved the Dispatch to Parliament on the deployment of the Swiss Armed Forces to protect the Swiss Embassy in Tripoli. A detachment has been deployed for a period of six months, taking over this task from a private security company. |

A detachment of the Swiss Armed Forces will ensure security for the Swiss Embassy in Tripoli and its staff in the coming year. The Federal Council has taken this decision on the basis of a deployment plan. |

Swiss support for the reconstruction of the Trebevic cable car in Sarajevo
The Trebevic cable car in Sarajevo, which was destroyed in the Bosnian war, is being reconstructed with Swiss aid. The municipalities of Grächen and Saas Fee in the Canton of Valais have donated the equipment of the Hannigalpbahn cableway for this purpose. The Swiss Armed Forces in conjunction with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) will start transporting the equipment next week. On Monday, the Swiss Ambassador to Bosnia-Herzegovina will sign an agreement on cooperation on this project with the City of Sarajevo. |

Espionage attacks on companies are now commonplace – Thirteenth MELANI semi-annual report
In the first half of 2011, the Reporting and Analysis Centre for Information Assurance (MELANI) detected higher numbers of espionage attacks on the most diverse range of companies worldwide. The number of hacker attacks aimed at accessing sensitive data also increased. There was a massive increase in skimming cases in Switzerland. These are some of the focus areas of the latest semi-annual report, which was published today. |
