Reliable secure connection

Contact between the Swiss embassies abroad and the government in Bern is never more important than when normal means of communication become unreliable. In such times of crisis the embassy radio is available.

Often, the embassy radio has served well - particularly on 11 September 2001, when all public means of communication including satellite links failed in the Washington and New York areas. The embassy radio system still ensured the transmission of messages between the Swiss embassy in Washington and Bern at all times.

Short wave radio
The short wave embassy radio provides the links between the Swiss embassies and the Swiss government. It is a secure communication system that is independent from any provider.

Operated by the DDPS
Users are the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and the Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDSP). The embassy radio team of the Armed Forces Command Support Organisation operates the systems in normal situations, and in addition provides the military specialists of the Command Support Brigade 41 (CS Bde 41) with training and advanced training for operations in extraordinary situations.
When the situation worsens, the embassy radio company takes over operations of the various radio installations in Switzerland and supports the systems management.
